LED Lighting for Crosswalks

Safety lighting, focused on pedestrians.

PEDCan is a patented light that helps drivers see pedestrians before they enter the crosswalk to avoid crashes.

Improving your high-risk corridors, one well-lit crosswalk at a time.

Top-down view of an intersection: a PEDCan above each crosswalk lights the four corner waiting areas where pedestrians gather — putting people exactly where approaching drivers can see them.

The Problem

Crossing at dusk or early morning is dangerous.

We light the road for cars, but the people crossing it are left in shadow. The data shows where that leads.

Make routes in your community safer

Hit your Safety Targets.

PEDCan fits the way DOTs, MPOs, and local governments already plan, fund, and deliver safety. No new program required.

Cities & Counties

Make your city safer, on budget

Light the high-risk crossings residents actually worry about. Start with one, scale when you're ready.

MPOs

Turn grant dollars into outcomes

Convert Safe Streets (SS4A) and HSIP funding into installed, measurable safety. Your MPO (like the Grand Valley Metro Council) administers the dollars; PEDCan delivers the results.

State DOTs

Prevent Nighttime Crashes

Reduce nighttime pedestrian crashes on the corridors you manage, without new poles or reconstruction.

How It Works

Three steps that turn a dark crosswalk into a safe one.

01 / INSTALL

Install

A single bracket mounts PEDCan on the signal your city already operates. Standard traffic-signal hardware, no new poles.

02 / IMPROVE

Improve

PEDCan turns a high-risk crosswalk into a measurable intersection safety improvement, the kind of upgrade Safe Streets and Vision Zero programs are built to fund.

03 / ILLUMINATE

Illuminate

In low-light conditions, the unit's photosensor automatically activates the lighting, a pedestrian-focused pattern so drivers see people before they cross, with no user intervention.

For Cities

Invest in safety.

PEDCan is built for how municipalities actually adopt new safety technology, low risk to start, easy to justify, and ready to grow into a corridor or citywide program. It’s grant-eligible under the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, turning safety dollars into installed, measurable results.

Methodology & sources Illustrative 5-year projection for a 20-crossing district, assuming ~1.5 pedestrian-injury crashes per intersection each year, about half after dark. The 42% reduction reflects FHWA’s Roadway Lighting Proven Safety Countermeasure (CMF Clearinghouse 436 / 433 / 192); the ~$460K societal cost per injury crash is severity-weighted from FHWA 2024 Comprehensive Crash Costs (FHWA-SA-25-021).
01

Pilot

Pick your highest-risk intersection. PEDCan installs on the existing signal, no new poles, with minimal disruption.

02

Measure

See the change in nighttime visibility and driver behavior. Our reporting helps you build the safety case your council and grant applications need.

03

Scale

Easily roll out across corridors and the whole city at an affordable per-intersection cost, budgeted locally and funded with grant dollars.

The Device

Engineered to be the simplest safety upgrade a city can make.

  • Pedestrian-focused light patternLights the people, not the sky. True vertical illumination that lets drivers see them before they enter the roadway.
  • 4,000 lumens at 43 wattsBright, even crosswalk illumination with low energy draw.
  • Single-bracket mountInstalls on new or existing poles, mast arms, or spanwire.
  • Automatic dusk-to-dawnTurns on automatically when it gets dark. No programming or manual schedules needed.
  • Built to scale affordablyEasy on municipal budgets. Pilot one crossing or outfit a corridor.
  • Built for the elementsDurable, weatherproof housing made to last outdoors.
Installation

Up and running in hours, not days.

PEDCan mounts on the signal framework your city already operates. No trenching, no new poles.

STEP 01

Attach

PEDCan attaches to standard traffic signal hardware.

STEP 02

Tie into signal power

Connect to the power the intersection already runs, no new service, no heavy electrical work.

STEP 03

Align with sidewalk

The pedestrian-focused beam is directed onto the waiting area and crossing, illuminating people before they cross, not the sky.

STEP 04

It runs itself

A built-in photocell switches PEDCan on at dusk and off at dawn (and anytime visibility is low), automatically, every night.

Laura Rampersad

Licensed Transportation Engineer

Laura knew the data. Proper lighting dramatically reduces pedestrian crashes after dark and in low-light conditions. As federal infrastructure funding opened up, she asked a simple question: why aren't we using it to make pedestrians visible and safe?

Then, on her drive home one evening, she watched a young woman get struck by a driver turning on a green light. The pedestrian survived, but poor lighting played a clear role. Laura went on to design PEDCan, retrofittable lighting that mounts on existing signals and removes the shadows that hide people before it's too late.

"We can make our intersections safer for pedestrians quickly and cost effectively."
