About Us
PEDCan is poised to make a significant impact on pedestrian safety in our communities. PEDCan’s patented, pedestrian focused approach addresses rapidly increasing pedestrian crashes with a low-cost solution that can be installed on traffic signal framework. The system positioned over the crosswalk can remove shadows, detect pedestrians and alert drivers to prevent or decrease severity of pedestrian and cyclist crashes.
PEDCan Founder
Laura Rampersad, a licensed transportation engineer created the PEDCan after connecting her knowledge that light dramatically mitigates pedestrian crashes in evening hours with her understanding of community-level initiatives and increased federal resources are happening in this space at the same time. She asked, why can’t we take advantage of the new infrastructure to provide better lighting for pedestrians?
She kept those observations in mind as she navigated my common routes in the evening hours. She observed that even intersections on major arterials have shadowed areas where pedestrians are present – making it difficult for cars to see pedestrians. Then a few months later on my way home from work, she personally witnessed a young lady struck by a driver turning with a green light. Seriously injured, the pedestrian survived but needed medical attention. Inadequate lighting at the intersection played a significant role in this incident. This convinced Laura to dive deeper and explore ways to bring this product to market.
Laura created a product that can remove those shadows and detect pedestrians to make crosswalks safer.
